By Michael Humphreys, NCTMB, PTA
Are you thinking about a career as a massage therapist? This article is intended to explain what is the field of the massage therapy is like.
I'm sure that you have many questions, which hopefully we will be able to answer in this article. There are both pros and cons to becoming a massage therapist and we will discuss some of them in this article.
For starters, the work can be physically demanding and, if you're not careful, you could be putting yourself at risk for physical injuries. This means your top priority should immediately become learning the correct massage therapy techniques. We suggest you look for an accredited massage therapy school in your area.
In addition to choosing the right school for you, there are other factors, which you should be aware of.
First, the good news. You can make great money as a massage therapist and have a lot of flexibility over your work schedule. You are performing a service that many people need and can benefit from receiving.
Now, for the not-so-glamorous news.
Many massage therapists who do massage full-time work when it is most convenient for their clients to see them.
Typically, since most people work during the day, this means many therapists frequently work during the evenings and weekends. If you cannot or do not want to work at these times, then a career as a massage therapist may not be for you.
Of course, there are clients and work situations where this is not the case, but the majority of prospective clients will want evening and weekend hours.
In order to be successful in the massage therapy business, you need to learn to market yourself, or work for someone else who will market you. Most massage therapists are not familiar with running a business or basic business principles like marketing, public relations, advertising, business taxes, networking, and basic accounting principles.
Because many new therapists haven’t become familiar with these principles, this is one of the major reasons why 70% of all new massage therapists fail in their first two years of business.
In fact, the average new massage school graduate lasts just 2 years in our field and the average massage therapist makes $17,000 a year!
These are very depressing statistics but it doesn’t have to be that way for you! We want you to succeed! We are committed to helping you build a successful massage therapy practice.
We want to show you the way to become successful because there are a lot of people out there who want massage and need massage therapy. The number of people getting a professional massage has increased 1-2% every year for the past ten years!
There are two major steps in starting the career of your dreams:
1) Choose an accredited massage therapy school that is close to you and offers the studies of your choice. To learn more about the local state or province massage laws in your area, please visit LocalMassageSchools.Com
